What is Soy Isoflavones ?
 

Soy Isoflavones are produced via a branch of the general phenylpropanoid pathway that produces flavonoid compounds in higher plants. Soybeans are the most common source of isoflavones in human food; the major isoflavones in soybean are genistein and daidzein. The phenylpropanoid pathway begins from the amino acid phenylalanine, and an intermediate of the pathway, naringenin, is sequentially converted into the isoflavone genistein by two legume-specific enzymes, isoflavone synthase, and a dehydratase.

• Soy isoflavones can affect hormone secretion, metabolic biological activity, protein synthesis.

• Epidemiological studies have found that Asian women (especially in China and Japan) who consume more soybean products have lower incidence rates of menopause-related hot flashes (about 25%, compared to 85% in North America) and lower incidence rates of estrogen-related cancers (breast cancer), cardiovascular diseases, and osteoporosis than women in Western countries. These benefits are attributed to the rich isoflavones in soybean products.

• Studies have also shown that soy isoflavones can improve cognitive function (especially non-verbal memory and frontal lobe function) and reduce the risk of Alzheimer's disease among menopausal women.

• Some studies suggest that consuming soybean protein (rich in soy isoflavones) can lower total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels in hyperlipidemia patients, but the evidence for this effect in individuals with normal cholesterol levels is insufficient.

• Studies have also indicated that consuming soybean products (rich in soy isoflavones) can reduce the risk of breast cancer among postmenopausal women by 18%. Additionally, consuming more soybean foods during adolescence and adulthood can reduce the risk of premenopausal breast cancer by up to 43%. However, the evidence for preventing breast cancer through the sole consumption of soy isoflavone supplements is still insufficient.
